Last night I did my final Fashion Styling project for my first study abroad class! I am actually done a day early too. All of our pictures for these last two shoots are not due until Wed. so now I can just relax and be happy with my work :) The last shoot was entitled, "The Rest is History." We had to choose a famous influential person in the fashion world and create a fashion editorial from their inspiration. I randomly choose Edith Sitwell. She was a poet from the early 1900's that wore costume jewelry, and very eccentric hats. She had an "old hollywood" style she was definitely before her time! I decided to focus on all of the hats she wore and modernized them to todays styles. This last project was worth 40% of our grade! It neeed to show all the we have learned throughout the course and I think that I really learned a lot and did a good job of incorporating all of it into my shoot. I learned that in a fashion editorial needs to have a unifying element in every picture shown. It also needs to show a different outfit and location in every shot. The backgrounds and locations need to also relate back to the narrative that you are trying to portray. The whole shoots purpose is to tell a story and sell a product through photography. There is so much thinking and planning that goes behind editorials, I had a lot to learn. For my Edith Sitwell Editorial I used 5 models which was a challange in itself! I had to get hats and accessories for all of them and schedule and time and location that worked for everyone. I used lyrics from her famous poetry and wrote them accross the girls shoulders. I had them all wear something strappless as to not interfere with the lyrics and then cropped out their clothes. They all were possed in a location that corresponded to their phrase. Their hats also went along with what their lyrics were saying. Everything in this shoot has a purpose and a meaning behind it! I put a lot of work and thought into this shoot and I am really happy with the way that it turned out and I think Edith would be too :)
"Patterings Meticulous" I used an meticulously crafted gate in the background that matched her hat made of many different patterns and jewelry.
"Youthfully Rediculous" I had her wear a bedazzled beany and unmatching accessories. She has pops of colors that represent the youthfullness. I really love the contrast in materials such as knits, florals, studs/metals. I also had her make a totally childish face."The busy clatter of the streets" I had her literally sitting on the street and I tried to get blurred cars running though the picture. Her hat represents a business woman that is on the streets on her way to work, she is sophisticated with pearls and her serious face.
"Shrilled like a parakeet" I had her wear a turban that I made from a scarf that incorporated colors of a parakeet! She had a gold chain that showed the costume jewelry concept that Edith Sitwell would wear. I has her on a bridge where all of the birds go spreading her arms like she can fly.
"Make it loud that we may dance" This hat represented the Baroque style hats that she would wear, my pose represents dancing and the volume of being loud.
I love this pose because be are all so serious and our hats and verses can be seen very well and are in order!
We all did a face that represented the words across our shoulders.
